Russian Woman Loses Leg and Hand, Protecting Children During Shelling

Posted: August 4, 2016 in Uncategorized

A Russian woman lost her leg and hand as she tried to protect her children when their home in Syria was shelled.

The woman, who has been living in Syria for 13 years, was having a meal with her family when their home was shelled.

“A large fragment hit her right leg – we had to amputate up to the knee. Her right hand was also amputated. Unfortunately, we can do nothing about the continuing inflammation. Her left leg was also seriously injured,” the head of the surgical department at the Aleppo hospital told journalists.

The woman’s son did receive injuries despite the mother’s efforts to protect her children, when the shell flew into the window. According to medics, the boy’s life is not in danger, but the mother’s condition is grave.

“Ideally, we would like for the her to be sent to Moscow to a good hospital,” one of the woman’s friends told journalists.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting a number of opposition factions and extremist groups. On February 27, a US-Russia brokered ceasefire came into force in Syria. Terrorist groups such as Daesh, as well as Jabhat Fatah al Sham (al-Nusra Front), both outlawed in Russia and a range of other states, are not part of the deal.

Russian servicemen have been carrying out regular humanitarian aid deliveries to various parts of Syria amid internal hostilities.
